and then I found a grenade...

Why is it when you have dirty hair, have been doing chores and garden work all day (so look 85% of my usual photogenic self *cough cough*) do you end up on national news? I'm not exactly sure how fair that is..

It's safe to say that we are totally in love with our new home but there was a lot of work we want to do to fix up the back yard. well not a lot but have you seen Jumanji? there are certain parts of it that feel somewhat reminiscent.

much to my husbands delight, after raking leaf litter and moving rocks around the garden for a few hours I wanted to finish one last spot. I raked under one of the large trees. There were so many leaves that it took several attempts in each spot to get down to the dirt... then out rolled this

I thought... umm that thing looks kind of like a grenade... but how the heck would that get in our back yard... in western Sydney, in AUSTRALIA...

A petrified pine cone maybe? One thing I miss in situations like this is being able to call my dad. He always knew what to do.

So after telling Tom to not touch it... just in case... i called the police.
No more than 10 minutes passed and a police officer came, took a quick look and called in that it looked pretty genuine.
Pretty soon afterwards Fireman arrived, then the news chopper started flying overhead and the news crews started arriving...

About an hour after we'd called the police, the Army had been called in to diffuse (if necessary) and collect the grenade.
They told us it was a US grenade and it contained no explosives (phew... )

According to our google image search (when trying to determine if it could possibly be a petrified pine cone and calling the police for that would be supremely embarrassing) that it could have possibly been from World War II.

We were told it's hard to tell how it got there, someone might have brought it home from the war as a souvenir and it somehow ended up in our yard
we were interviewed by all the major news stations and got messages from friends all over the country that they saw us on the news... (requests for autographs can be left in the comments)
how does that compare to your Saturday afternoon? Definitely not the one I expecting to spend tidying the garden and then doing some craft for christmas presents (because i'm all cool like that and totally not afraid to do nanna craft).

have to say though, our emergency services and defence personnel are pretty rad, I know I felt pretty safe knowing they were there. thanks guys!
